Asylum Matters is looking for a dynamic leader passionately committed to upholding the rights of people seeking asylum in the UK at a critical time when the right to asylum is under threat.
Asylum Matters became an independent charity earlier this year. We have ambitious plans for the future as we seek to maximise the potential of our collaborative campaigning model and identify opportunities for change at local, regional and national levels.
About Asylum Matters
Asylum Matters is a small, specialist team of campaign professionals based around the UK, working with an extensive network of frontline partners to advocate for progressive change in the asylum and immigration system. Since it was established in 2016, Asylum Matters has played a significant role in bringing about positive change for refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK. We co-lead the award-winning Lift the Ban coalition campaign, that brings together over 250 organisations, think tanks, trade unions and local authorities, calling for the right to work for people seeking asylum. Together with high-profile national campaigning organisations, we work with front-line organisations to expose and address a range of issues that affect the rights and wellbeing of people in the asylum system, such as housing standards and asylum support.
The opportunity
We are looking for an experienced and politically-savvy campaigner with a track record of developing impactful campaigns for change. Recent Government proposals to overhaul the asylum system pose a significant threat to the right to claim asylum in the UK so we are looking for someone who is comfortable with navigating a challenging external environment.
The Deputy Director will have experience of collaborative working and will bring together the expertise and resources from a range of organisations, large and small, in order to secure positive asylum reforms.
Our preferred candidate will have experience in a leadership position in the charity sector and a track record of success in managing people and programmes of work. Together with the Director, they will lead and develop Asylum Matters in line with its strategic objectives, ensuring the delivery of a clear and compelling campaigns and advocacy strategy.
A steadfast commitment to upholding the rights and wellbeing of people seeking asylum, who are so often disadvantaged by an inhumane and inefficient system, is essential for the role. We are particularly keen to hear from people with lived experience of the UK asylum system. The successful candidate must have the right to work in the UK.
